Information

  Q:
What is ATN?

  A:
The Austin Tennis Net (ATN) is a network of tennis players in the Austin, Texas area looking for fun and competitive matches.

  Q:
How are the matches scheduled?

  A:
The matches are arranged by you and your opponent at a time, date, and place agreed upon.

  Q:
How often are the matches played?

  A:
A 'round' lasts for 2-1/2 weeks. You have two matches to play during that round. New players might have to play a third match during their first match.

  Q:
How much does it cost to participate?

  A:
The is a yearly $10 fee.

Matches

  Q:
How do I find out who I am supposed to play?

  A:
Go to the 'my matches' link. The information for your matches can be found there.

Placement

  Q:
How is placement decided?

  A:
The process of placing players is rather long. Although mostly automated, the final placements are manual. Basically, - the scores are checked to ensure uniformity. - run a script to add match/sets wins and losses and mark those moving up and down. - print out a report to manually check and mark for withdrawal those that can't play their matches (with a nasty note added for lack of intiative). - mark those players where both matches are non-competitive. - run a script to move people up and down, removing those withdrawing. - add in returning players. since they have a history I look at the percentile they were last in and try and place them close to it. - move up or down those players whose matches were not competitive. - add in all the other new players. this can be a long process, especially when there are more new/returning players than withdrawals. if a spot is available in that person's skill level they are placed there. if not, they are placed as close as possible. their matches are checked after the round to see if they should be moved up or down more than one rung.

Doubles

  Q:
My partner is not available for an upcoming match. Are subs allowed?

  A:
Yes. The goal is to play. Anyone may substitute (if not in the system they need to be added). For a listing of subs, go to the 'Doubles Subs' page and choose a ratings level. You can either email individuals or the whole group.

Challenge Matches

  Q:
What is a challenge match?

  A:
It is an extra match you can play to show you should be moved up a bunch of rungs. Challenges can only be made with those players showing 'N' in the previous rung column on the Singles Ladder listing.

  Q:
What happens if I won the challenge match but lose my regular matches?

  A:
You have to win both of your regular matches to move up. The new player also needs to be competitive in their regular matches. Should you win all of your matches and the new player lose all very badly, the new player will most likely be placed below you in the next round. Should you win all of your matches and the new player loses but plays closely, you will most likely be moved to a rung close to the new player.

  Q:
What happens if I lose the challenge match? Will it hurt my current standing?

  A:
No, as long as your regular matches are competitive, you won't move down because of the challenge match loss.
